The Chemistry and History of Silly Putty Silly Putty is an amazing stretchy toy thats sold in a plastic egg. In the modern era, you can find many different types of Silly Putty, including types that change colors and glow in the dark. The original product was actually the result of an accident. Silly Putty History James Wright, an engineer at General Electrics New Haven laboratory, may have invented silly putty in 1943 when he accidentally dropped boric acid into silicone oil. Dr. Earl Warrick, of the Dow Corning Corporation, also developed a bouncing silicone putty in 1943. Both GE and Dow Corning were trying to make an inexpensive synthetic rubber to support the war effort. The material resulting from the mixture of boric acid and silicone stretched and bounced farther than rubber, even at extreme temperatures. As an added bonus, the putty copied newspaper or comic-book print. An unemployed copywriter named Peter Hodgson saw the putty at toy store, where it was being marketed for adults as a novelty item. Hodgson bought the production rights from GE and renamed the polymer Silly Putty. He packaged it in plastic eggs because Easter was on the way and introduced it at the International Toy Fair in New York in February of 1950. Silly Putty was a lot of fun to play with, but practical applications for the product werent found until after it became a popular toy. How Silly Putty Works Silly Putty is a viscoelastic liquid or non-Newtonian fluid. It acts primarily as a viscous liquid, though it can have properties of an elastic solid, too. Silly Putty is primarily polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). There are covalent bonds within the polymer, but hydrogen bonds between the molecules. The hydrogen bonds can be readily broken. When small amounts of stress are slowly applied to the putty, only a few of the bonds are broken. Under these condition, the putty flows. When more stress is applied quickly, many bonds are broken, causing the putty to tear. Lets Make Silly Putty! Silly Putty is a patented invention, so specifics are a trade secret. One way to make the polymer is by reacting dimethyldichlorosilane in diethyl ether with water. The ether solution of the silicone oil is washed with an aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution. The ether is evaporated off. Powdered boric oxide is added to the oil and heated to make the putty. These are chemicals the average person doesnt want to mess with, plus the initial reaction can be violent. There are safe and easy alternatives, though, that you can make with common household ingredients: Silly Putty Recipe #1 This recipe forms a slime with a thicker consistency, similar to that of putty. Solution of 55% Elmers glue solution in waterSolution of 16% sodium borate (Borax) in waterFood coloring (optional)Ziploc bags Mix together 4 parts of the glue solution with one part of the borax solution. Add food coloring, if desired. Refrigerate the mixture in the sealed bag when not in use. Silly Putty Recipe #2 The glue and starch recipe may also be seen as a slime recipe by some people, but the materials behavior is much like that of putty. 2 Parts Elmers white glue1 Part liquid starch Gradually mix the starch into the glue. More starch may be added if the mixture seems too sticky. Food coloring may be added, if desired. Cover and refrigerate the putty when not in use. This putty can be pulled, twisted, or cut with scissors. If the putty is left to rest, it will pool out, like a thick liquid. Things to Do With Silly Putty Silly putty bounces like a rubber ball (except higher), will break from a sharp blow, can be stretched, and will melt into a puddle after a length of time. If you flatten it and press it over comic book or some newpaper print, it will copy the image. Bouncing Silly Putty If you shape Silly Putty into a ball and bounce it off a hard, smooth surface it will bounce higher than a rubber ball. Cooling the putty improves its bounce. Try putting the putty in the freezer for an hour. How does it compare with warm putty? Silly Putty can have a rebound of 80%, meaning it can bounce back to 80% of the height from which it was dropped. Floating Silly Putty The specific gravity of Silly Putty is 1.14. This means it is more dense than water and would be expected to sink. However, you can cause Silly Putty to float. Silly Putty in its plastic egg will float. Silly putty shaped like a boat will float on the surface of water. If you roll Silly Putty into tiny spheres, you can float them by dropping them into a glass of water into which you have added a little vinegar and baking soda. The reaction produces bubbles of carbon dioxide gas, which will stick to the spheres of putty and cause them to float. As the gas bubbles fall off, the putty will sink. The Solid Liquid You can mold Silly Putty into a solid form. If you chill the putty, it will hold its shape longer. However, Silly Putty isnt really a solid. Gravity will take its toll, so any masterpiece you sculpt with Silly Putty will slowly soften and run. Try sticking a glob of Silly Putty to the side of your refrigerator. When a child grows up he or she learns new things by observing the environment, and based on his observations will decide what is virtuous and what is not. Macro Economics articles A. Comment on article 1 Globalization became an important aspect in the international economic relations. I chose this article and liked it because it discusses one of the important issues that international economic relation face, which is globalization. In my opinion it’s not only a problem, but it could be useful to certain countries, yet it could destroy the fair competition in some countries. To me, if there was no barrier or limitation for the globalization, people might stop buying the local product, which means the gross domestic production will decrease leaving the country in an economic loss. Because of globalization, most of the countries in the world will no longer concentrate on the local markets. Their focus became on regional or even world markets. It also changed the way they produced domestic goods. Just because a country might have the resources and ability to produce a particular commodity no longer means that they will produ... ...heart which gives no space for creativity. In my opinion as a student I think that the books we study should be interesting and leave a space of creativity for the student because we have many lectures and we need to study a lot of book and it is very hard for most of us to study all the books by heart, that is why the study books should be written in way that allows all the students to read it and understand the content to be able to write the idea in their own way and not just copy pasted text from the book. As a conclusion I see that the book has a rich content for those who want to be specialized as market researchers because of its intensive information but I think it would be better if we could learn the research methods in more general ways that we understand and can help us in our future jobs not just theoretical details we forget after finishing the exam.

What is the meaning of Women Empowerment?

In the middle of the 18th century, women empowerment was greatly demonstrated through boycotts and uprisings. Not only women from the lower class suffered, but women from the middle class suffered as well. Lower class women who were working in factories would work the same amount as their male counterparts, get constantly mistreated and would still get paid lower than men. Middle class women had to always listen to their husband and never go against them. There were a lot of stereotypes between the freedom of men and women. Because of these stereotypes, this caused women to rebel and most women were very well aware of their subordinate status in their community and applied several feminist movements. One women who showed high representation of women empowerment was Abigail Adams. Abigail was the wife of president John Adams and had five children. Since she was married to the president, she was always left alone at the house taking care of all her five children as well as their farm. Since her husband was hardly home, she got very bored doing the same activities everyday. Abigail indicated many concerns, through a letters to her husband, about women and how they are being treated in society. Abigail wrote several letters to her husband, but one of her letters stated that â€Å"Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If perticuliar care and attention is not paid to the Laidies we are determined to foment a Rebelion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation.† He letter was one of the first steps to to fight for women's rights and freedom. She exclaims that men should not have all the power in their homes because they would all become oppressors. Abigail also told her husband that if women did not get equal rights, they would rebel and not pursue the laws where they had no voice or representation in. Lastly, she emphasized the fact that John Adams needs to remember the rights of women when the Declaration of Independence was being written.

Point 1: Drink and drive First of the causes is drinking and driving is the leading cause of car accidents. Driving while intoxication is dangerous, because drinking increases your inhibitions and self-confidence but lowers your driving performance and your ability to focus. In other words, alcohol impairs the decision-making ability of the brain. For example, when people get drunk, they do not even think they are drunk. They may feel like they can do anything. But they cannot. Many accidents occur because of drinking. These accidents involve mostly one car, but other people are killed by drunk drivers. People have to be educated about drinking and driving, so they do not kill themselves or innocent people on the road. Point 2: Using cell phone while driving The second point is using cell phones while driving is also a cause for car accidents. When a cell phone is used while driving, it distracts the attention of the driver, leading to car accidents. While using a cell phone  many people tend to miss the traffic signals, not really concentrating on driving. The process of dialing or answering the phone can make them lose control of the vehicle as well. Even though the driver is looking at the road, he or she can easily get distracted by the conversation. This can result in fatal accidents. Point 3: Teenage drivers Another cause of road accidents on the road is teenage drivers. Some teenagers cause fatal accidents, because of immaturity and lack of experience. Teenagers are very impulsive. Although not intending to hurt anyone, they sometimes drive very aggressively. It is not difficult to find teenagers driving with one hand on the steering wheel, seat pushed back, and with loud music playing. In traffic they go wild, trying to seek attention. They underestimate the risk of what they are doing. All these acts result is serious consequences on the road. Many accidents of young drivers result from their own mistakes. It will cause a psychological shadow in their future. Historical Method essays History is the study of the past. For historians the past dates back to 4,000 B.C., when events were first marked by writing, until present day. In its content history is everything. Historians spend their whole lives figuring out which events are more substancial than others. In order to achieve this, the historical method is put into practice. A problem solving technique using the gatheration of data, classification, interpretation and the most essential step, writing and teaching. The first step to studying the past events is gathering data. There are two types known as primary and secondary resources. Although both play an important role in gathering information, primary is the one you can not omit. In order to decipher which is primary and which is secondary there is a criteria that must be met. Person and time are the two categories under criteria. An example of primary resources would be a journal entry written by a person during that specific event. A historian could use a victim of the Holocausts diary as a primary source. Being that the victim experienced those actual events. Secondary resources would be a text book or magazine article written about a past event. The writer however, was not present at that point in time. Secondary resources eventually evolve into primary. The second step deals with classification. Every historians way of classifying is different. Their frame of reference is based on genetics and their environment. The way a person is raised to believe in certain aspects or taught by the people around them determines their point of view. The first way to classify events is chronologically. A historian might take World War II for example, and list all the events from when the war began to the final battle that ended the war. Another approach is concepts and ideas. A historian might group events according to religious aspects, social, economical, environmental, etc....
